![]() When mating is complete, the female heads off to find a shelter in mud or in a cave formed in a river bank, where, after incubating the eggs in her genital tracts for 6–7 months, she gives birth to several dozen fully formed young. A group can remain entwined for a month, in the course of which the female mates several times. More typical mature specimens reportedly can range up to 5 m (16 ft 5 in), with adult females, with a mean length of about 4.6 m (15 ft 1 in), being generally much larger than the males, which average around. The latter roll themselves around a female’s body, forming a ‘breeding ball’ through which each male tries to find a way towards the female’s cloaca to mate. The green anaconda is the world’s heaviest and one of the world’s longest snakes, reaching a length of up to 5.21 m (17 ft 1 in) long. Males reach sexual maturity at a snout-to-vent length (SVL) of 128-143cm. In the breeding season, females emit pheromones to attract males. Rivas and Corey (2008) report a recapture of a wild adult Green Anaconda. Their jaws, joined by highly elastic ligaments, can stretch to a spectacular degree, allowing them to ingest often very large prey such as capybaras and caimans. They are constrictors: they bite their victims then roll themselves around them to strangle them before swallowing them head-first. The green anaconda is part of the Boidae family and it’s binomial name is Eunectes murinus. This is the world’s largest snake as well as one of the longest (after the Reticulated Python). ![]()
